• Wisconsin Deer Hunting at Turtle Creek

Welcome to the heart of deer country, located in the rolling hills of western Wisconsin, at the northern edge of the Driftless Area. We are free range, whitetail deer outfitters in the state that tops the record books year after year for trophy whitetails.

At Turtle Creek Outfitters, you'll find hardwood ridges, tangled creek bottoms, agricultural fields, and trophy bucks. We've reduced our maximum number of hunters to just a few per year. Our under-harvesting (along with having great neighbors) has helped maintain a steady stream of trophy bucks. The past few years have been very successful.

We look forward to hearing from you!

This buck is part of the Crab Claw Buck series we photographed this year. We seem to have this genetic trait of having split beams, or Crab Claws as we call them here. Whatever the reason, these bucks make for interesting and unique mounts. This buck was dropped on the spot at 220 yards. I LOVE a clean kill! Bonus points to Tyler for making a great shot!

The mushroomed lead was found on the back side of the deer just inside the hide. 180 grains of lead from a 300 short mag round delivered with a Hart rifle.

Here are a few of the daylight bucks I caught on camera at the end of October and first 10 days or so of November. We came so close, seeing some of these bucks while hunting, then coming within a couple hours of others. That’s according to the trail cams. One morning the Mini-12 buck was standing with a doe for 90 minutes while she fed in front of the house. I stalked for a couple hours with the bow, never getting closer than 80 yards. At one point another buck came to challenge, but the Mini-12 chased him off, then returned immediately to mount the doe. I don’t know how the Crab King eluded us. He slipped in and out right before our eyes……..more on Crab King later.

We’ve had a few close encounters with the big boys, including a miss by me…..ouch! Ryan bagged this bruiser buck on Sunday. The buck only went 50 yards.

I included the photo of the rub with me in it to show how high that rub is.

For me personally…….I’ve taken off my peep sight and added a kisser button. That’s kind of desperate in the middle of the rut, but figured I had nothing to lose. The sweet spot on my glasses is so small. When shooting a bow out the corner of your eye, everything is out of focus. The peep sight was also killing me in low light action. I like the kisser button method when shooting at the target. I’ve been drawing my bow on the smaller bucks for practice. We’ll see what happens when the big guys wander by. Wish me luck….I don’t want to be relegated to the crossbow.

Daytime activity is heating up. One of my cousins who helps out with spring deer stand work, missed an eight point working a scrape.

We had a beautiful foggy morning that cleared into this sunrise.

Notice the doe bed down on the right side of the photo. That little doe bed down three nights in a row in exactly the same spot, watching the active scrape activity.

Once again I’ve had trail cam problems. A few cameras checked out due to battery failure, so that’s not so bad, but I know I’ve easily missed hundreds of images. Another SD card is questionable. So most of my latest batch came from 2 cameras. One of the working cameras is a cheap Flash Moultrie I picked up at Cabela’s Bargain Cave a couple years ago, and it just keep chugging along.

We picked the last of the carrots and turned over the garden. It’s amazing these carrots did this well. They were never watered and the soil was like concrete when I harvested.

A pair of smaller bucks sparring.

A couple of these bucks just showed up recently. This nine with his head down showed up after gun season last year and has stuck around.

This buck, CrabKing, is unique. It’s difficult to say how many points he has, but 11 minimum.
